Welcome to this comprehensive blog post about shock absorbers, also known as dampers, an essential part of any vehicle, whether it's for racing, off-roading, or just daily use on the road. In this post, we will dive deeper into the different types of shock absorbers available, how to mount them, and how to adjust the preload for optimal performance.

Types of Shock Absorbers
There are various types of shock absorbers available for a Tomos, each with its own features and benefits. Below we discuss the most popular options, including the MKX and YSS models.
MKX Shock Absorbers
MKX shock absorbers are a popular choice for Tomos riders looking for a reliable and affordable option. These shock absorbers come in various lengths, with the shortest length available on our webshop being 260 mm and the longest being 360 mm. We also offer a 280 mm length, which corresponds to the original length of the shock absorbers on a Tomos, making them an excellent choice for those who want to maintain the original look of their moped while still improving suspension.
MKX shock absorbers are designed for everyday street use and offer a good balance between comfort and performance. They are easy to install and provide a basic level of damping suitable for most riders. Additionally, they come with a preload adjustment feature that allows you to adjust the spring tension according to your personal preferences.

YSS Shock Absorbers
YSS shock absorbers are a premium option for those seeking top-notch performance and quality. Like the MKX models, YSS shock absorbers also come in multiple lengths, but that's where the similarities end.
YSS shock absorbers are known for their excellent damping properties and superior build quality. YSS shock absorbers are hydraulic, using fluid to absorb shocks and bumps on the road. This means they work with oil or another fluid, which helps slow down motion and absorb impacts. The result is a smoother ride and better vehicle control, especially at high speeds or on rough terrain.
Though YSS shock absorbers are more expensive than their MKX counterparts, they offer excellent value for their price. They come with a preload adjustment tool, so you can easily adjust the spring tension.

Other Types of Shock Absorbers
Besides the MKX and YSS shock absorbers, there are other brands and models available that offer various lengths and styles. Whether you're looking for a longer shock absorber for off-roading or a stiffer spring for a racing Tomos, there are numerous options to choose from. Other brands we offer in the webshop include: DMP, Fast Arrow, and IMCA.
Some of these shock absorbers come with additional accessories, such as different bushings and a shock adjustment tool, allowing you to tailor them to your vehicle's specific needs. It's important to choose the right size and style that fits your riding style and Tomos configuration.

Mounting Shock Absorbers
Tools Needed to Mount Shock Absorbers
- New shock absorbers (e.g., MKX or YSS)
- Socket wrench set
- Body washers (M10 or M8 depending on the shock absorber)
Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing a Shock Absorber
1. Preparation
Place your Tomos on the center stand. This keeps the moped stable and prevents it from sinking during installation.
2. Remove the old shock absorbers
Use a wrench to loosen the bolts at the top and bottom of the shock absorbers. Completely remove both shock absorbers before installing the new ones.
3. Install the new shock absorbers
Start with the top and ensure the shock absorber is securely in place. If your mounting points are M8 instead of M10, bushings are provided that you can use to make it fit. Place an M10 body washer between the shock absorber and the bolt at the bottom to prevent the shock absorber rubber from coming loose. Tighten the bolts securely, but avoid using too much force to prevent damaging the shock absorbers. Tight is tight! Repeat this process on the other side.
4. Check the installation
Ensure the shock absorbers are securely fastened with no play. Test the suspension by carefully sitting on the moped and checking if everything functions properly.
Tips for Mounting Shock Absorbers
- Ensure you choose the right length of shock absorbers that suit your riding style and preferences.
- Consider using a preload tool to adjust the suspension according to your weight and riding conditions.
Adjusting preload on your shock absorber
The preload setting on a shock absorber determines how much tension is on the spring when it's not under load. This affects the ride height of your vehicle and how the shock absorber responds to bumps and dips in the road.
To adjust the preload, use the provided adjustment tool that fits the shock absorber. Turn the spring tension in or out as desired, depending on your preference. Ensure that both shock absorbers are adjusted equally for optimal balance.
A higher preload creates a firmer feel, which can be beneficial at high speeds or on rough terrain. A lower preload offers more comfort and is suited for everyday use on smooth roads.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What length shock absorber should I choose?
- How often should I replace my shock absorbers?
- Are MKX shock absorbers suitable for off-road use?
The most common lengths for a Tomos are 280 mm, which corresponds to the original length, and 360 mm for those who want more height. Choose the length that best suits your riding style and personal preferences.
The lifespan of shock absorbers varies depending on usage and maintenance. Generally, it’s a good idea to check them for wear every 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers and replace them if necessary.
MKX shock absorbers are more geared towards street use, while YSS and other hydraulic shock absorbers perform better in off-road conditions.
